Mary Elizabeth (Fugh) Shields, 97, of Rivercliff Terrace in Kittanning, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2017, at the ACMH Hospital.
She was born on Feb. 24, 1920, in Aspinwall, and is the last surviving of eight children born to the late Carl John Sr. and Della Kathryn (Maharg) Fugh.
Mary lived most of her married life in the area and was a housewife. She was married to the late Raymond A. Shields Sr. for 69 years, from Oct. 16, 1942, until his passing on Oct. 22, 2011.
She was a member of the Worthington Presbyterian Church, where she was in the church choir, and a deaconess and she also taught Sunday school and Bible School. Mary also volunteered at the Presbyterian Home in Kittanning as a hostess and Shopper Coordinator for 17 years.
She is survived by sons, Raymond A. Shields Jr. of Florida and Dr. Harry E. (Carol) Shields of Illinois; grandson, Bradley S. (Lori) Shields of Indiana, Pa.; granddaughter, Sherry L. (Brian) Shearer of Ellwood City; grandsons, Mark A. (Bree) Shields of Spring, Texas; Dr. Paul E. (Vicki) Shields of Erie; Phillip (Angee) Shields and Andrew C. (Nicole) Shields, all of Illinois; 14 great-grandchildren; and a very special daughter in-law, Sandy Shields, of Worthington.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl John Sr. and Della Kathryn (Maharg) Fugh; her husband, Raymond A. Shields Sr., who passed away on Oct. 22, 2011; granddaughter, Brenda Shields; brothers, James "Elwood" Fugh, Carl "Bud" Fugh, Nelson Fugh, and Mark Fugh; and sisters, Ruth Louise Dugan, Della Kathryn Fugh, and Anna Long.
Friends will be received on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017, from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. at the F. Duane Snyder Funeral Home, 119 Bear St., Worthington with Pastor Robert Hindman, her church pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the Worthington Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
