The family of Cecil is of illustrious origin and great antiquity. The name has undergone various alterations in its orthography: at an early period it was Sytsyle, or Sitsilt, afterwards Sicell, Seycil, Cicil and now Cecil. In the year 1015, Llewelyn ap Sytsylt raised a great army against Aedan who had usurped the principality of North Wales and slew him in battle. This Llewelyn was descended from the Kings of Wales by his mother's side, whose name was Trawst. She was a daughter of Elise, second son of Anarawd, who was eldest son of Roderick the Great, who reigned over all Wales from 846 to 876. In the following year he was himself slain, and left one son, Griffith, who governed Wales to 1054, when he was beheaded by his subjects, and his head carried to Harold. In 1079, Urgeny ap Sytslt was slain by some Englishman. In consequence of these disputes amongst the Princes of Wales, application for assistance was made to Robert Fitz-Hamon. Robert de Sytsylt was cut off from all hope of succeeding to the throne of his ancestors, and having assisted Fitz-Hamon in the enterprise which took place in 1092, he was rewarded with the lands of Alterennes, which continued in the possession of his descendants until the year 1590.
