James Ervin CLAYPOOLE

• BIRTH: January 20, 1850, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania

• MARRIAGE: October 24, 1870

• FACTS: "The early years of his life were spent on the farm. What education he had was gotten in the public schools and a few terms in the Worthington Academy. As a teacher in the public schools he was a success.
  In 1871, James E. Claypoole was employed as a clerk by the firm of Graff and Firth in the general merchandise department and his business career which was to be crowned with such eminent success was started. The retiring of Mr. Firth from the active management of the woolen mill made necessary the selection of one capable of making this branch a success and Mr. Claypoole was put in charge.
  On May 2, 1899, the entire plant was destroyed by fire. A new woolen mill was built, Mr. Claypoole having equal interest with his partners. Ambition was born in him. Loyalty was his most prominent virtue."

  His will, dated April 14, 1914 (Estate 8678), bequeathed $3000 to the Worthington Presbyterian Church; one-third interest in the Peter Graff Company. divided equally between is wife and children.
