Herbert B. Claypool
Kittanning

Herbert Byron "Barney" Claypool, 87, of Kittanning, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, in UPMC Presbyterian hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born Dec. 30, 1921, in Kittanning, a son of the late Herbert M. and Mabel G. Claypool. He was a lifelong resident of Kittanning. He was a retired welder with Pulman Standard in Butler. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 3rd US Infantry Regiment, a unit of the Army. Three battalions of the regiment are currently active. The regiment is readily identified by its nickname, The Old Guard (TOG), as well as an escort to the president. The regimental motto is Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not). The regiment is the oldest active unit in the Army, having been first organized as the First American Regiment in 1784. He was a member of Union Baptist Church. Herbert enjoyed camping, canning and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He is survived by his sons, David B. and Hilda Claypool, of Utica, N.Y., Dennis and Joanne Claypool, of Cowansville, Richard A. and Barbara Claypool, of Jackson Center, and Jeffrey L. and Mary Claypool, of Ford City; sisters, Madeline and Austin Gillam and Shirley and Jim Acerni, both of Kittanning; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda M. Ruston Claypool, who died Jan. 3, 2000; and son, Barry Gene Claypool. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in MANTINI FUNERAL HOME, 701 Sixth Ave., Ford City. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home with Pastor Timothy Gillam officiating. Interment will be in Lawn Haven Cemetery.
