According to "The Cecils of Hatfield House An English Ruling Family" by David Cecil, Houghton Mifflin 1973: David was the younger son of a poor Welsh squire. He left his home in the remote hills of Wales-Herford border to follow Henry Tudor in his campaign for King. after Henry became King he rewarded David Cecil by making him yeoman of the Guard. David bought the property near Stamford in Northamptonshire. He became Mayor and MP.
